Project III - API
Booklet from "Invisible Cities"
Jen McKnight

For this project we were to read "Invisible Cities" by Italio Calvino and select three cities from the book. I chose Valdrada, Zenobia, and Olivia. For each chapter's illustration, we were to employ some sort of type experimentation. I chose to use a combination of photography and digital manipulation, mixed with some handmade elements. I wanted each piece to match what the city was like. This book is classically set in Caslon on French's Dur-o-tone 80lb Butch White paper.
The cover has a vertical bellyband printed on the same red paper as the inner lining of the book. For the binding, I used a sewing machine to sew red and black thread down the center.
For pages that were not strictly classical, I used elements from all three illustrations.
For the illustration pages, I wanted to have a splash of color without having to do a flat "spot color" treatment to the images. I decided to do velum overlays with the city's name in the same red color as the front matter and binding thread.
